Before we explore "The Gift of Forgiveness", let us pause and reflect on this question:  Who were you in your family? 

  

I am the lastborn—the “wash belly,” as we called it in Jamaica.

 

Being the youngest came with its own quirks, privileges, and expectations, and I know some of them well.  But what about you? What position did you hold in your family?  

Were you the: 

​

  • Firstborn? 

  • Only child? 

  • Middle child? 

  • Lastborn? 

  • Scapegoat? 

  • Black sheep? 

  • Favored child? 

Perhaps you carried a role that is not mentioned here.

 

Who were you in your family? As we begin to explore the life of Joseph, this is an important question. 

​

Joseph was a son in a complicated family system. His father loved him more than his brothers and demonstrated that love openly. His brothers saw the difference. They hated him and could not speak peacefully to him. Before Joseph entered the pit, there was already a story unfolding in the home. 

  

  • There was favoritism. 

  • There was sibling rivalry. 

  • There was resentment. 

  • There was relational tension. 

​

Eventually, what had been building beneath the surface erupted in a volcanic eruption of betrayal, and Joseph was sold to the highest bidder. 

 

The pit was not the beginning of Joseph's story. It was the eruption of what had been developing within the family.  And Joseph's journey was only beginning. So, before we rush to the end of Joseph's story—to the place where he could say,

 

“But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good.” 

— Genesis 50:20 

Perhaps we need to slow down and walk through the story. What happened between the wound and the forgiveness? That is where this journey begins. 

  

The Gift of Forgiveness will take us through the life of Joseph, chapter by chapter. From Genesis 38 through to Genesis 50, it will explore the relational wounds, experiences, choices, resilience, and meaning-making woven throughout his journey.

 

And as we walk with Joseph, we may find ourselves retracing some of the stitches in our own lives. 

​

Your [relational] wound is part of your story, but it does not have to write the ending.
