Writers Wisdom

To Our Fellow Writers, Readers, and Friends

Writer's Wisdom is an initiative we started years ago when we first began posting content online. Through this category, we have shared "words of wisdom" and "tips" to help fellow writers like ourselves navigate and appreciate the creativity and craft of writing.

Starting today, we are sharing a word of wisdom that we have learned for ourselves.

It is easy to say, "don't overthink it," to someone else, but we have come to realize that we don't need to overthink our writing. When you write it all down, even the same words, eventually the beauty of your best narrative will come right onto the page.

"Write It Down"

If you’re overthinking it, write it down. Write how you feel. It doesn't need to make sense because it will make sense in the end.

Our purpose for this year is to let the words speak for themselves, to allow the writer in each of us to express their voice, and to adopt a posture of listening. If the inner you is saying, "I'm overwhelmed," then go ahead and write it down. Write down why you are overwhelmed. What is happening? What is that one word that resounds in your mind as it relates to your writing project? What is it saying to you?

"Give Your Self Grace"

As you begin to write, you may notice a shift and how the words just begin to flow. Our key takeaway for this season is to not sweat the big stuff, but to appreciate what our story is trying to tell us.

And if you're still experiencing a blank, write about it. Describe the blank space. Is there a sound? Is it too quiet? Whatever is happening, write it out and give yourself permission to know it's okay if you don't have anything right now.
